4 Tips for Leading A More Active Lifestyle

Not all of us are die-hard fitness fanatics. That’s okay – but it’s still important to be healthy. With summer right around the corner, many of us are exploring new ways to improve our overall health and fitness. If you struggle to fit an exercise routine into your agenda, try making a small difference by tweaking your life in these simple ways:

Park farther away. Usually, many of us focus on finding the closest parking space possible to the front door of whatever store we’re shopping at. Sometimes, we’ll even drive through the lot a few times and wait until someone else pulls out of a nearby spot. Next time you visit the grocery store or the mall, challenge yourself to park farther from the front door and walk the rest of the way.

Take the stairs. Promise yourself that whenever you can, you’ll take the stairs instead of an escalator or elevator. Taking the stairs is often faster than waiting for the elevator, and it burns more calories! This simple change in your routine is great for your body and your mind.

Walk it off. On days where you don’t feel like exercising and a trip to the gym is just too daunting, go for a walk instead of calling it quits altogether. Explore your neighborhood, take your dog to the park, or even walk on a treadmill – you may not be exhausting yourself physically, but you’re still burning more calories than you would be if you had stayed on the couch!

Trade your desk chair for an exercise ball. This is a pretty popular habit these days, and it’s one we support! If you spend most of your time sitting at a desk, try switching it out and replacing it with an exercise ball. Sitting for the majority of the day is actually quite detrimental to your health, and an exercise ball can make a significant difference because it engages your core muscles throughout the day.

Of course, it’s great to get your heart rate up as often as possible; we want you to live long and be healthy! That said, these tips are meant to help anyone – active or otherwise –make subtle lifestyle changes that will improve their health. Give them a try, or get creative and come up with a few of your own!
