The Best Ways to Sleep During The Summer Heat

August 18, 2022

We’ve all been there. It’s the dead of summer, and you’re trying to sleep. You toss and turn, but you can never get comfortable. And then, before you know it, you wake up in the middle of the night feeling terrible.

The hot weather can affect your body and your sleep schedule. So when it gets to be too much, here are five ways to help yourself cool down so that you can finally get some rest:

Nap During The Day If Possible

Most people sleep better at night than they do during the day. However, sometimes napping during the day can be easier than sleeping at night.

Some people find it easier to get some shut-eye during their lunch break or in the evenings when they are not as busy with work and family commitments. Many people find that napping in the daytime helps them feel refreshed and energized for the rest of their day.

Some people cannot sleep at night and find it easier to nap during the day. This is because there is no pressure to “just get to sleep”.

Napping can be beneficial for the body. It increases productivity, improves mood, and helps with mental clarity. It’s important not to nap too long because it can make you feel groggy when you wake up and have difficulty getting back into a regular sleep pattern. Napping should be done in moderation and having an appropriate time of day for naps.

Use The Early Morning Sunlight

The mornings and evenings will be the coolest, and if napping during the day isn’t possible for you, perhaps rising a bit earlier would be the best for you. Getting up with the sun helps our circadian rhythm stay intact and gives us a cooler time to start your day.

Get More Vitamin D

About half of Americans are vitamin D deficient, and it can be even worse in Oregon. Between our near-constant cloud coverage most years and the devastatingly hot summer this year. It can be hard to find a way to get sunlight that isn’t either being covered or melting. This can make vitamin D quite hard to come by!

Vitamin D can aid in sleep. Vitamin D is involved in the production of melatonin. So ensuring you have enough can help you get the sleep you need.

Don’t Over Extend Yourself.

It’s easy to over plan in the summer. Between summer camps and swim lessons, pushing ourselves to the brink is easy. It’s possible to extend ourselves so far we end up in sleep debt. This can affect not only your health but can affect your ability to maintain a sleep schedule.

Keeping a few days of the week just to rest and relax can be the best for our health and wellbeing.
