Tips for Newlyweds

Discuss finances. Discussing finances is very important to do in a new marriage because you more than likely have different spending habits. Maybe you’re a saver and your partner is a spender. It’s important to be open and honest about this because every purchase you make effects your partner. Discuss how much you can spend each month and stick to that. This should probably be discussed even before your married, but if you haven’t, discuss it now!

Learn how to deal with conflict together. Every person handles conflict differently, so it’s important to remember that your partner will deal with it differently. This can be frustrating so communicate about it and keep an open mind. Find a way for the two of you to handle it together effectively.

Learn to compromise. This might be one of the best pieces of advice for any couple in general because you can’t always get what you want, and neither can your partner. Compromising puts you guys on equal grounds and makes for a happier and stronger relationship.

Try their interests. This doesn’t mean you have to do everything together, but this is a good way to learn new things about each other and deepen your bond. This can also lead to finding new activities that you guys can enjoy together.

Let the little things go. Everyone has pet-peeves, but don’t let them get in the way of your relationship. Ask yourself, "in the grand scheme of things, how much does this matter?" And if it truly doesn’t matter and will cause more problems than just letting it go–then just let it go.

Don’t let the romance die. Make time for it! No matter how busy your lives get, it’s important to have that romance with your partner. When that honeymoon stage starts to fade (you’ll notice), get creative! Surprise your partner with his/her favorite meal, or plan a getaway, anything to keep your romance alive.

Make time for you. If you don’t make time for you or let your partner have time to himself/herself, you could start to resent each other. You want to enjoy the time you spend together not hate it, so taking some time to yourself and letting your partner have time to himself/herself is healthy!
